- Dr. Oz Extra: How To Get Rid Of Those Pesky Spider/Varicose Veins
- CORALVILLE, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Emily Huinker had sclerotherapy to treat her spider veins five years ago, now she just maintains them.
- "Before my right thigh was always covered in spider veins so I was really embarrassed when I was out in shorts or a swimsuit," Huinker said.
- Huinker is one of nearly 25 million Americans living with varicose or spider veins. The condition affects both men and women and people of all ages. Younger people often get the veins if their family members have them.
- Kimberly Schulz M.D. of Infinity Vein Center said both varicose and spider veins are caused by similar factors including pregnancy, standing for long periods of time and heredity.
- Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent the veins.
- "Those who do no exercise have more problems with venous disease," Schulz said.
- Infinity Vein Center offers two treatments for varicose veins.
- "We do the VNUS closure procedure. It heats the vein from the inside and basically heats up the diseased portion of the vein, therefore it takes away the source," Schulz said.
- "Sclerotherapy is used for spider veins. A solution is injected into the vein causing scarring down of the vessel. When the needle is removed the vessel becomes inflamed. Then it heals or scars down and disappears," Schulz said of spider veins.
- Sclerotherapy costs about $275 for a 30 minute session. During that time Infinity providers inject as many veins as they can.
- The procedures can completely remove existing, unsightly veins. However, the factors contributing to the development of spider veins such as heredity can always bring on new veins.
- A proactive way to prevent new vericose or spider veins is to wear graduated compression stockings. The stockings keep the blood from pooling in the leg. They're designed to be tighter around the ankle and foot. Then the compression lessens as the stocking moves up the leg.
- Compression stockings are available in 15-20 mm compression over the counter. For anything stronger, patients need a prescription.
- Schulz cautioned against wearing regular panty hoes that are tight in the waist or above the knee. She said they can actually cause the opposite effect of a compression stocking, meaning they can cause the blood to pool, possibly making unsightly veins worse.
- While spider veins are repaired for cosmetic purposes, varicose veins can cause discomfort.
- "There's typically significant swelling, discomfort, throbbing, burning," Schulz said.
- Huinker said her spider veins may not have hurt her physically, but they were tough on her confidence. She said getting rid of them gave her a real boost.
- "I just felt really confident when I was out by the swimming pool or when I was out in shorts," Huinker said.
- While there are plenty of pills and creams on the market that promise to get rid of unwanted veins, Schulz cautions that they simply don't work and encourages people not to waste their money.

- Infinity Vein Center Introduces the Closure Procedure for Varicose Veins
- The VNUS® Closure procedure, an alternative treatment option to traditional vein stripping surgery, brings state-of-the-art technology to an age-old disease.
- The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, your physician will position the Closure catheter into the diseased vein, through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter delivers radio frequency (RF) energy to the vein wall. As the RF energy is delivered and the catheter is withdrawn, the vein wall is heated, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.
- Following the procedure, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site, and additional compression may be provided to aid healing. Your doctor may encourage you to walk, and to refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time.
- Patients who undergo the Closure procedure typically resume normal activities within a day.
